Based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, The Institute follows a group of children with extraordinary abilities who are taken to a mysterious facility and subjected to a series of unsettling experiments. For this project, I contributed to the early creative development of the main title sequence through concept design and style frame exploration. Working closely with the creative team, I developed visual directions that explored the atmosphere, tone, and narrative themes of the series. Through composition, lighting, and look development studies, these explorations helped establish the visual language and creative foundation for the title sequence during its initial development phase.

Using the Rorschach pattern—a psychological tool to reveal hidden thoughts—as a reflection of Luke’s mind, this concept symbolizes his perceptive and analytical abilities within The Institute. The sequence begins with abstract, shifting inkblots, representing both the institute’s manipulative control and Luke’s initial confusion. These inkblots then morph into the intricate texture of a cocoon in close-up, symbolizing his entrapment and the institute’s psychological grip.

As the camera zooms out, the cocoon cracks open, revealing a butterfly whose wings mirror the original Rorschach pattern. This transformation embodies Luke’s journey from a state of mental and physical captivity to one of clarity and empowerment. The Rorschach-to-butterfly motif visually captures Luke’s evolution as he learns to interpret and overcome the institute’s hidden agendas, symbolizing his ultimate breakthrough.

Using the maze as a metaphor, the concept reflects The Institute’s manipulation and Luke’s journey to clarity. Beginning as a chaotic, shifting structure, the maze represents confusion and psychological entrapment under the institute’s control. As it gradually simplifies, aligning into a single path, it mirrors Luke’s growing understanding and eventual breakthrough. The title reveal at this endpoint signifies his shift from captivity to empowerment, with the maze serving as a metaphor for his transformation from controlled subject to empowered individual.
